Introduction to Kythnos

Kythnos is located in the northern Cyclades and is between Kea and Serifos. The island has a large coastline making for over 70 beautiful beaches. It is also home to one of the largest caves in Greece. In the eastern village of Loutra, are some natural hot springs.

The island is popular with Athenians to vacation on but has not been as popular as many of the other Cycladic islands making it a great place to experience a Greek island that is much quieter in the summer.

Kythnos is a great option for a day trip from another island or you can travel to it from Lavrio port near Athens.

Keep reading to find out how to experience Kythnos with our 1 day and 2 day itinerary.

Loutra, Kythnos

Kythnos is full of experiences that are fun and exciting. Here are 5 recommended experiences:

1. Visit the Churches of Kythnos. Kythnos is home to many churches, but two really stand out. One is Panagia Kanala. It is a major pilgrimage site and is considered miraculous. The other must-visit church is Panagia of Nikous. It is located right outside of the Chora, which means “main town”, and you can walk there.

2. Do a Self-Guided Tour of the Island. Kythnos is not very large and it would be an easy to rent a car and explore the island. This way you can see all the churches, Kolona beach, the hot springs, and the cave.

3. Soak in the Thermal Springs. On the eastern side of the island is the village of Loutra. In Loutra are some natural thermal springs that supposedly have healing properties. One of the springs flows into the sea and you can sit right in the sea to enjoy them.

4. Eat Your Way Across the Island. Starting in Loutra, you can work your way across the island eating food. Kythnos has amazing Greek food in all the villages including the Chora.

5. Visit the Katafiki Cave. The cave is one of the biggest in Greece. It was once used for mining purposes and was used as a shelter during World War II. Now residents gather there on Easter.

1 Day and 2 Day Kythnos Itinerary

1 Day Itinerary

09:00-12:00 – Rent a Car and Drive to Kolona Beach. This remote beach is a small strip of a beach located on the western side of the island. It is a beautiful beach that is connected to a small peninsula. Due to its location, it is quiet and a great place to swim.

12:00-15:00 – Drive to Loutra for Lunch.  You will be hungry after the swimming. The village of Loutra is located on the other side of the island from Kolona Beach. After lunch, you can take a dip in the thermal springs in Loutra.

15:00-18:00 – Head back to Merichas to have dinner. Ostria Restaurant is a great choice in the port. They serve fresh fish and have wonderful service. Because of the location, it is a great place to watch the sunset.

2 Day Itinerary

After your first day on the island, add-on one more day with these activities.

Morning and Afternoon – Extend your rental car and take a drive to Dryopida. After exploring the village, visit the Katafyki Cave. The cave is natural but was used for mining for many years. The entrance is free but you should leave a tip for the guide. They will take you through the accessible parts of the cave and tell you its history.

Afterwards, you can visit the Folklore museum in the center of town. It is a traditional house and contains all the traditional tools and clothing of a farming family.

Dinner – Take the scenic drive to Chora. Enjoy exploring the village with its cute streets and shops. Then settle in for dinner at Messaria. We highly recommend the baked eggplant. The portions are large here so you might want to share.
