Introduction to Kea

Kea, also known at Tzia, is a small island close to the coast of mainland Greece. Due to its location, it is a popular weekend spot for Athenians. It is a great day trip destination from the port of Lavrio.

The island is very hilly but offers great hiking trails and stunning views from Ilouis, the village at the top. Ilouis can be reached by the public bus. You can also drive a car up, but there is no driving in the village and parking is limited.

Experiences

Kea is small but has plenty of scenery to take in. Here are 5 recommended experiences:

1. Visit the Lion of Kea. In the village of Ioulis, is the Lion of Kea. It was carved sometime before 600 BC. Not much is known about the smiling lion but is worth the visit to see such an interesting ancient piece.

2. See the Artifacts at the Archaeological Museum. Not far from the Lion is a small museum. It is filled with artifacts found on digs around Kea. While it is small, the pieces are unique.

3. Swim at Koundouros Beach. This blue flag beach is a wonderful place to go for a swim. There are sun beds and umbrellas to rent on Koundouros Beach as well as a small beach bar.

4. Hike down to Ancient Karthea.  Located near a beach but not accessible by car is the ancient site of Karthea. It is relatively unspoiled since it is hard to visit. Make sure to bring plenty of food and water since there are no services at the beach. Take a cooling swim before you head back up.

5. Visit the Panagia Kastiani Monastery. The monastery at this site is the classic blue and white of Greece. Its location offers amazing views of the Aegean Sea.
