Introduction to Ios

Ios is an island in the Cyclades group of islands. It is located halfway between Naxos and Santorini. The island is known for its young vibrant party scene but has much to offer the non-party crowd as well. The island boasts beautiful beaches and over 365 churches! It is also home to Homer’s alleged tomb.

The Chora rivals the Oia village on Santorini and the sunset from Ios is stunning. In the Chora, you will find windmills, several churches and plenty of restaurants for the foodie.

Keep reading to find out how to experience Ios with our 1 day and 3 day itinerary.

Experiences

Ios is only accessible via ferry however, you can catch the ferry to Ios from Athens and many other islands. The island is a popular spot to stop at on the way or returning from Santorini.

Here are 5 recommended experiences:

1. Relax on the Beach. There are several wonderful beaches around the island. If you are staying in the port area of Ios, check out Yialos beach. It is a short walk from the port and offers shallow waters. A short bus ride away is Mylopotas beach. This beach has deep golden sand and offers lots of water sports.

2. Take a Day Sail Around the Island. Some of the best spots on the island are not reachable by car so it is a good idea to take a day sail around the island to explore. There are several options in the port including sailing, catamarans and speed boats.

3. Watch the Ios Sunset. The sunset in Ios is stunning and is not to be missed. There are several good spots to watch it from including the Liostatsi Hotel pool area, which you can visit as long as you purchase a drink or the Ios Club.

4. Visit the Skarkos Archaelogical site. This well preserved Bronze Age site is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Cyclades. Artifacts from the site can be seen at the small museum in the Chora.

5. Climb to the Top of the Chora. At the top of the hill in the Chora (town) is a small church. It offers stunning views of Ios and is another great place to watch the sunset. The climb is not difficult and is worth it.
